A long respected hip hop journalist and documentarian, Kevin Powell put his love for community at the forefront of his campaign for Congressman in his Brooklyn district. Powell has been a vocal social activist, speaking publicly and hosting seminars aimed at providing mentorship and guidance to young black males.

Celebraties such as Marlon Wayans and Megan Good voiced their support for the Congressional hopeful as campaign fundraisers were held in New York and Los Angeles.
At the core of Powell's activism is a commitment to improving the education system, creating jobs and more small businesses, helping the 'Green' initiative and ending violence against women and girls.
βIt is always movements that are local, that have developed local leaders, be it Dr. King in the South, Malcolm X in Harlem or the range of young leaders...that are doing phenomenal work around the country that are going to effect change,β Powell said in 2010. "Solutions have got to happen in Houston and Dallas and LA and New York from people who are really serious about changing and transforming our people.β
