Nicki Minaj has been the most talked-about artist in hip hop this year. Her unique style and persona have made her a permanent fixture on blogs and gossip television, but more than that, Minaj has single-handedly revitalized the popularity of female MCs. At the Underground Music Awards she won the Female Artist of the Year award. Young Money Entertainment, recognizing the huge talent this young lady had, signed her to the label in 2009.
Along with fellow Y.M. star Drake, she has helped turn the imprint into the most popular label in hip hop. Her debut album is forthcoming, but she's had hit singles such as “Your Love,” which peaked at 14 on the Billboard Top 100, number seven on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart and Nicki Minaj became the first female artist to top the Rap Songs chart unaccompanied.
Minaj has graced the cover of magazines such as Complex, VIBE, Black Men and XXL and her status as 2010s ultimate sex symbol can't be questioned. Except for perhaps Lady Gaga, there hasn't been another female artist more discussed over the past year.
