Debra Lee

Debra Lee As CEO of BET Networks, Debra Lee oversees one of the most influential and recognized institutions in urban entertainment. This year BET's award shows, in particular the 2010 BET Awards and the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards, were among the highest rated on cable television.

To the delight of fans all over the country, Lee helped resurrect beloved sitcom "The Game," by moving it to BET and relaunching it with new episodes. BET held a symposium to address the images of black women in media that was overseen by Lee, and the executive is a regular fixture at panels around the country addressing these and other issues facing people of color on television and in media, in general.

"I really had to be the individual who took charge and was clear about what my vision was, was clear about what my passions were, so that I could believe in what we were doing," Lee said about her earliest days as CEO. "But as the leader of the company, it had to be about where I wanted to take this company."

BET Networks, under Lee's direction, has unveiled a renewed programming strategy, with the growth of original content at it's core. Reality shows, scripted programs and original movies have become a staple of the cable network's cache.
