The man who aggressively turned Radio One into a media powerhouse, Liggins guides one of the nation's largest radio broadcasting companies and the largest radio broadcasting company that primarily targets African-American and urban listeners. Currently Radio One owns and/or operates 53 radio stations located in 16 urban markets in the United States.
Liggins has successfully implemented a strategy of acquiring and turning around under performing radio stations, and also solidified the company's push into television. The network TVOne now reaches more than 50 million homes via cable and satellite.
"When I wake up in the morning and think of competing, I don't think of the next black guy," he told the Washington Post. "Bob [Johnson] is not the competition; Viacom and Clear Channel are. Those 200 guys above Bob on the Fortune 500 list, that's who I've got my sights on."
Liggins steered the company through a bit of a downturn in 2009 with 2010 continuing the uncertainty for the brand. Nonetheless Liggins has sustained the television network and RadioOne's shares have risen in the latter half of the year.
