DJ Premier has long been the producer most accredited with defining the sound of East Coast hip hop, from the early 1990s onward. To this day, Premier remains one of the most sought-after and respected beatsmiths in the industry; in 2010, he's collaborated with Fat Joe, Bun B, Kanye West and The Game.
His independent label, Year Round Records, releases music in the hardcore East Coast tradition by such acts as Blaq Poet and NYGz, and he is currently putting together his first compilation album DJ Premier Presents Year Round Records: Get Used To Us, with the help of well-known lyricists such as KRS-One, Styles P and Joelle Ortiz.
Premier also continues to carry the legacy of Gang Starr, the legendary hip hop act that he and the late Guru formed together. Premier still works through the Gang Starr Foundation, a collective of east coast rappers that he and Guru mentored.
The producer still keeps his ear to the streets--and the airwaves. "I hate when I hear artists say, 'I never listen to the radio, I never listen to anyone else when I’m making my album,' Primo says. "You should stay in the know. Never turn your back on what makes this industry click."
