Mr. Boomtown continues to be among the most in-demand video directors in hip hop. A year after winning the BET Award for Director of the Year, he was nominated once again in 2011. Boomtown shot a staggering 30 videos in 5 months this year, including videos for Meek Mill, E-40, Waka Flocka Flame and Gucci Mane’s “Ferrari Boyz,” Big Sean’s “Finally Famous,” and countless others.
Its well-known that Boomtown got his start working in and around his native Texas, shooting videos for some of the region’s underground stars and well-respected rap veterans. He even handled film duties for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. He built his reputation on a tireless work ethic, but it was the quality of his work that catapulted from regional upstart to nationally-recognized and award-winning industry brand.
Dubbed “The Dirtiest Director Down South,” Mr. Boomtown’s brilliance as a director is well-known as this point. But he’s also an inspiring example for young aspiring directors. The lensman who grinded his way to the top remains a symbol of hope and dedication—which accounts for much of his respect in hip hop circles. Hip hop is about the underdog becoming the top dog, and no video director epitomizes that ethos more than Mr. Boomtown.
