Fred MwungagubungaFred Mwungagubunga’s story epitomizes the Do-It-Yourself ethos of hip hop entrepreneurship. The founder of MediaTakeOut walked away from a career as a corporate lawyer to launch the world’s most beloved and hated urban gossip site. Mwungagubunga has created a digital empire that boasts over 300 million page views a month.

He’s a graduate of Columbia and has an MBA in business, but he wanted something more. “I didn’t have enough money to retire, so I didn’t know what I wanted to do,”  Mwangaguhunga explained. “We didn’t have a ton of money, so what we did was spend all of our money on advertising, on groups on websites called blogs.”

Through it all, he’s been able to build a brand that’s among the most recognized in the blogosphere and he’s managed to sustain the brand despite harsh criticism in many circles for posting what many feel is false or controversial content. Whether you love or hate MediaTakeOut, it has to be acknowledged that this businessman obviously knows what he’s doing.

Agree or disagree with MediaTakeOut’s editorial direction, there’s clearly an audience for the content. And Fred Mwungagubunga has proven that he’s at the forefront of the urban online experience.
