Datwon Thomas
By Rayna Dean Friday, December 30th, 2011
Datwon ThomasFor fifteen years, Datwon Thomas has been one of the most respected men in hip hop journalism. He’s transitioned from print media, to online and back to print—all without ever losing a shred of his cache and respect among the artists and personalities that he’s interviewed or helped shine a spotlight on. He started his career as an intern with VIBE magazine before becoming the editor-in-chief of KING magazine and later the editor-in-chief of XXL.

For two years, Thomas was the COO/EIC of Russell Simmons’ multicultural entertainment website, GlobalGrind. Up through early 2011, Thomas helped take GlobalGrind to new heights and also made his mark as a strategic executive. He was able to help secure several partnership deals with companies like online streetwear retail site Karmaloop and he spearheaded the initiative that led to GlobalGrind acquiring the popular social network Twitter aggregator CelebrityTweet

In a case of ‘history repeating itself,’ Thomas has found himself back at VIBE, now serving as Editorial Director for the very brand that introduced him to the entertainment industry. He’s helped resurrect the once-struggling company and now he and VIBE are sitting, once again, near the top of hip hop and entertainment media.
