Former UGK member Bun B continued to prove that he's one of hip hop's most beloved and respected elder statesmen throughout 2011. Appearing on albums and mixtapes ranging from Big K.R.I.T to Jay Electronica to Killa Kyleon, the Houston rap legend is seemingly the most in-demand guest star in hip hop despite having been in the business for over 20 years.
He even made a surprise appearance at a concert by reunited punk-pop band Blink 182--a testament to his wide and seemingly limitless appeal.
And Bun's year wasn't just defined by music. After making the announcement in 2010, the rapper officially began his tenure as a college educator, with his course "Religion & Hip Hop Culture" becoming one of the more talked-about classes offered at Rice University. Bun has long been active in the Houston community, giving back and working to raise awareness amongst young people.
The city of Houston recognized Bun's work and legacy, and honored the rapper by proclaiming August 30th "Bun B Day." "Today is a very big day for myself, the Houston hip hop community and I think for everyone who cares about their fellow man,ā Bun B said. āIām not being honored for being an MC, or for my album on the carts. It's about what happens when I leave the studio."
