Since helping to choreograph Michael Jackson's iconic video "Remember the Time" at the tender age of twenty-one, Fatima Robinson has been the most in-demand choreographer in the music industry. Having worked with Usher, Jennifer Hudson and the late Aaliyah, Robinson has built a reputation as one of the best in the business.
Robinson choreographed the Black Eyed Peas' current world tour and also choreographed the 2009 Oscars performance for Best Original Song. Her distinctive blend of hip hop and classical dance has been showcased in ads for companies as varied as Rock Band, Pepsi, Gap and Apple.
Robinson has won MTV Awards and choreography awards for her work, which also includes recent collaborations with Will Smith, Isla Fisher and The Rock.
“I am a hip-hop choreographer,” Robinson says. “Whatever I do, whether it’s ‘Dreamgirls’ or an awards show like [Hip Hop Honors], is influenced by that. For ‘Dreamgirls,’ I had to make the movement authentic to the time and still make it feel fresh. [Motown] represents African-American music, and R&B and hip-hop are children of that whole era. And once those children started scratching their parents’ records, they became the next level of African-American music, and what I do is a part of that.”
