One of the most respected African-American scholars and cultural commentators, Dr. Cornell West has remained an elder who sincerely attempts to build bridges between the Civil Rights generation and the hip hop generation.
West is a passionate humanitarian who has been a keynote speaker on virtually every major panel discussing culture and politics within the last year, and his latest memoir, “Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud,” detailed Dr. West's long love affair with music and how it continues to affect his life. In 2010, West also partnered with talk show host Tavis Smiley for a new radio show “Smiley and West”, and has collaborated with artists as varied as Prince and Talib Kweli, among others.
A progressive activist who describes himself as a non-Marxist socialist, West is often featured on the political show “Real Time with Bill Maher” and has won numerous accolades including the American Book Award, and has amassed more than 20 honorary degrees. "Hip-hop is here to stay," Dr. West has said. "So the question is how do we connect the legacy of Curtis Mayfield and Nina Simone and Gil Scott-Heron to hip-hop?"
