Bernard "Bun B" Freeman
By Todd Williams Tuesday, November 16th, 2010
Bernard Since the death of his former UGK partner Pimp C, Bun B has worked hard to keep the legacy of the Underground Kingz intact. His latest album Trill O.G. received the heralded 'Five Mic' rating in the Source--the first album to receive that distinction since 2005. Cementing his status as one of the most respected veterans in hip hop, he's appeared on albums by virtually every hot rapper in the industry, from Drake to Lil Wayne to Jeezy; and the Port Arthur, TX native also was asked to teach a Hip Hop and Religion course at Rice University. The course will be available starting in 2011.

As a hip hop elder statesman, Bun's influence has been cited by many younger stars in the industry, with Lil Wayne claiming that the Texas legend was the biggest influence on his career. Superstar Drake has also praised Bun as a pioneer and as an ongoing source of inspiration and guidance. The two collaborated on Drake's well-received "So Far Gone" mixtape and Drake appeared on two tracks on Trill O.G.

While many hip hop pioneers are arbitrarily acknowledged as legends but quietly dismissed as relics, Bun B is just as vital as he was in his twenties. Judging from his endless parade of collaborations and the unparalleled respect he receives from younger artists, the southern rap godfather is more popular today than he's ever been.
