Dana "Queen Latifah" Owens
By Martin Davies Tuesday, November 16th, 2010
Dana Queen Latifah's long been one of hip hop's most versatile and successful personalities. This year, she continued to maintain high visibility as a pitchwoman for CoverGirl cosmetics and Jenny Craig, and as a voiceover star for Pizza Hut. Additionally, Latifah's Flavor Unit Entertainment became part owners in New York Spring Water, which markets the VBlast vitamin water.

Ever the busy actress, she appeared in two films, Just Wright and Valentine's Day, and made a cameo on HBO's hit show "Entourage." Her iconic status has led to the rapper/actress/singer hosting no less than three awards shows this season--the 2010 BET Awards, Proctor & Gamble's Beauty & Grooming Awards, and for the 5th year in a row, the People's Choice Awards.

Latifah's success stands as an example of how an artist, with some savvy and patience, can build their brand without compromising their ideals and how an entrepreneurial spirit can open up various creative and fiscal avenues. While many artists pursue various business ventures, there are very few personalities in hip hop that have managed to not step outside of the box and succeed as consistently and spectacularly as Queen Latifah.
