L.A. Reid heads one of the most powerful, respected and iconic brands in hip hop. As chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Island/Def Jam, Reid is captain of hip hop's most storied ship and he guides some of the industry's brightest careers.
Reid oversees the careers of megstars like pop singer Mariah Carey, superstar rapper Jay-Z, and countless others including Nas, The Roots and Kanye West. Reid also serves as executive producer for numerous projects on his label, including recent releases from Justin Bieber and Rihanna, often giving final say on what songs make or miss the cut.
Reid was asked to speak about his experiences in the industry and offer his perspective on African American executives at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Reid was also honored by UNICEF at the organization's Snowflake Ball for charitable contributions he has made. He was given the Spirit of Compassion Award.
"I think the makings of a great executive are understanding the music and the art and the marketing and promotion," Reid told Charlie Rose in 2009. "But also being a dynamic business executive."
