Fab 5 Freddy has been an influencer of hip hop culture since it's very beginnings. As one of the first grafitti artists to obtain fame, Freddy helped push hip hop into the national consciousness in the late 70s and early 80s via party promotions and helping to produce the seminal hip hop film Wild Style. He parlayed his cache into a hosting job with MTV's first, and most iconic, hip hop program, "Yo! MTV Raps."
Today, Freddy continues that tradition of bringing hip hop culture to the masses. He is an executive producer of VH1's Hip Hop Honors program, which celebrates the legends and pioneers of hip hop culture and he also works with VH1 Networks to develop hip hop-centric programming on the network. The 2010 Hip Hop Honors program specifically honored the southern hip hop movement. "For a long time we talked about East coast and West coast," said Fab 5 Freddy. "We felt like the South has evolved and we should tell that story. This is where so much of our roots originate from the South."
In the past year, Freddy has also appeared in and contributed to a film honoring artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who's ascension mirrored the emergence of hip hop. Freddy was also tapped to take part in MTV's celebration of "Yo! MTV Raps" 20th anniversary.
