Julia Beverly knows everyone in hip hop. Growing Ozone Magazine from a local publication to an internationally-recognized brand was no easy feat, but Beverly parlayed a love for southern hip hop and an unparalleled work ethic into a unlikely hip hop success story.
She even launched the Ozone Awards, which was among the first hip hop awards shows to emphasize the South. "I don't even know what a typical business model is," she said in 2010. "I've never worked at another magazine. But I think a lot of times people get caught up in the idea that, 'This is the way things are supposed to be done.'"
In 2010 and 2011, Ozone landed interviews and cover stories with some of the industry's most talked-about voices, ranging from Juelz Santana to controversial West Coast rapper Lil B. In bit of a comical twist, Ozone even helped hip hop fans 'find' rapper Mike Jones, who had fallen off the radar after a high-profile ad campaign back in 2005.
