James "J." Prince
By Rayna Dean Friday, December 30th, 2011
James J. Prince is the Godfather of Southern Hip Hop. As founder of Houston's Rap-A-Lot Records, Prince has had a hand in some of the region's most legendary figures, ranging from the Geto Boys and Scarface to UGK. The label remains one of the most respected in the industry--and its easy to see why, Prince has remained at the helm since its inception and he's built his reputation on loyalty and a quiet-but-firm demeanor.

In the past few months, Prince and Rap-A-Lot have continued to fortify the label's legacy, with acclaimed releases from veteran stars like Bun B and Z-Ro.

Rapper Bun B's acclaimed 2010 release Trill O.G. continued to reap benefits for the label, and it was announced the rapper's late partner, Pimp C, will also have several posthumous recordings released on the label as early as 2012.

Rap-A-Lot signed hip hop veteran Juvenile to its roster and Prince quickly piqued rap fans' interest when he said that he believed the iconic label could reunite the New Orleans' rapper with his former group, The Hot Boyz. Prince even became an adviser to boxing superstar "Sugar" Shane Moseley.
