Radric "Gucci Mane" Davis
By Martin James Friday, December 30th, 2011
Radric Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane spent much of 2011 juggling various legal woes, but that didn't mean that the 1017 Brick Squad Records founder wasn't also sustaining his position as one of the more influential figures in southern rap music. With superproducer Lex Luger under the imprint, as well as stars Waka Flocka flame and OJ Da Juiceman, Brick Squad retained its place among rap's elite throughout the year.

The Brick Squad releases, Flockavelli and Gucci's own Georgia's Most Wanted, ended the label's year on a high note. Gucci also appeared on singles and mixtapes throughout the year, with artists ranging from Rick Ross to Busta Rhymes. He released his "King of Diamonds" mixtape in late 2010 and, legal issues notwithstanding, there have been talks surrounding a reality show for the rap star.

His collaboration with fellow Atlanta superstar Waka Flocka Flame, the album Ferrari Boyz, debuted in the Top 25, specifically the #21 spot on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart. In another somewhat bizarre twist, Gucci Mane also kick-started one of 2011's most unexpected hip hop trends. The rapper emerged in January with an ice cream cone tattooed on his face; and rappers ranging from Diamond to Young LA had similar face art within months of Gucci's infamous branding.
